Cast:

Karlheinz Böhm is Frank Braun (as Karl Boehm)

What the box says:

Demented scientist Jacob Ten Brinken tries to create a "perfect woman" using artificial insemination. Alraune soon exhibits the worst traits of her parents, a deranged prostitiute and a vicious killer. Beautiful but souless, she lures unsuspecting men to their deaths.

Plot:

First the screen crawls about the dangers of the mandrake root and how its powers are used. Frank tries to a pay a visit to his uncle's mansion. However, the butler refuses to let him in. The scientific uncle is at a convent looking for his daughter that disappeared.

You have no idea how many Singing or Flying Nun jokes I've had tolerate...

Frank tells his buddies about how he saw a girl at the mansion. They all head back to look for her.

Frank discovers the girl, Alraune, is his uncle's daughter. She wants to meet Frank later.

Scientist uncle finds Frank who wants to borrow some money. Asking about the cousin, Frank is positive she's not a cousin. He storms out of the mansion. Later, Alraune is told about her mother.

Frank meets with the Princess and Olga. She warns him to avoid Alraune and how his uncle's medical license was removed and how he was fired from the university. That is why uncle is so against Frank. The princess offers to pay Frank's college bills provided he goes to Paris.

Frank visits Alraune who offers to go with him. The butler spots them together and later informs uncle-scientist who offers to pay Frank's bills. Scientist reveals to Frank that he created Alraune through artificial insemination. Her mother was a lady of easy virtue, and her father was a killer. Her personality is pointing to a criminal activity.

Before leaving for Paris, Frank warns his buddies about staying away from Alraune.

Uncle gets so tired of Alraune's attitude. He hires a governess for her. Alraune learns that Frank left for Paris the previous night. Alraune convinces her father to buy the maid's land for its sulfur water. Uncle plans to get the Princess to help invest and build a resort on the site.

Alraune talks with Olga who loves Frank. Alraune does some talking about how pining away and somehow Olga commits suicide that night. Scientist suspects that Alraune was behind it.

Later, on a ride with a guy, Alraune returns alone.

How I got caught in a fishnet is quite a funny story..
Scientist isn't happy with his "daughter's" attitude. She flirts with one of the hired hands and then something happens to him, too.

Some people find the hired hand dead from a riding accident. Alraune is tired of the governess and wants her fired. She gets the butler to help her. A missing necklace strangely gets in the possession of the governess.

At the grand opening of the resort, the ballroom dancing ensues. Alraune has a couple of guys pining away for her. She spots Frank who's returned with his medical license and asks why he left her. Alraune wants Frank to help her.

Butler threatens to blackmail his boss. Alraune tells her father she plans to run off with Frank. He finally tells her how he "created" her and that Frank left after he learned.

Scientist wants to take Alraune away to Paris. Princess is mad that she's not got her investment money back. Alraune runs off with Frank following her. She tries to get Frank to leave. He tries to explain that she's not evil. Scientist shoots Alraune so no one else could have her. Cut to the gallows march to the good scientist.

What I say:

Questioning what makes a person or causes them to be what they are has given philosophists plenty to debate. The lack of a soul could expand that debate into theology which would make a far harder conversation. Movies let scientists try to create a "perfect" subject. We all know what happens because failure ensues. Everyone has learned that much from the number of Frankenstein movies. Most people know that mad scientists may have went from the widely recognized Bride of Frankenstein to the far less known Frankenhooker.

Erich Von Stroheim may be best remembered for the butler Max on Sunset Blvd. However, he is also known for the movies he directed like Greed. The fact that in so many movies actors portraying directors parody his Austrian, German accent with the militaristic directing style is another of his memorable traits. When Von Stroheim pops up acting, you definitely have someone who can chew scenery almost on a William Shatnerian level.

Creepy families go from the Bates family of Psycho to Spider Baby and the creepy uncle from the family in 13 Ghosts. Funny, to find such a European styled horror movie that has cousin love. No bad "Suthern" jokes. Well, technically, Alraune wasn't Frank's cousin. However, the idea didn't seem to be unnerving to any of the characters in any way.

The movie hints that Alraune is behind the deaths with her magical powers. Lost in translation is everything about the mandrake root. Alraune is the German version of the narcotic mandrake root . Honestly, Alraune could have been named anything and there would have been no difference in the story. Mandrake has superstitions about growing under where a man is hanging from the gallows. At least 2 deaths were riding accidents, we never saw how they happened whether the horse was spooked, etc...However, it only gets to be implied that the things are accidents. The framing of the necklace is definitely Alraune scheming.

The length may be the problem. My DVD copy has it listed as 90 minutes but the actual run time is 78 minutes. IMDB has the time listed as 92 minutes. Several things like the deaths happen off screen so your not sure if a character has died to moved away to another country. This is an awfully small body count movie. One of the big problems with movies is making the characters easy enough to differentiate. That's why typical horror movies have the standarad characters which are that easy to tell apart.

Unnatural has been remade several times since the first time it was made as a silent movie. This version seems to pop up on plenty of the DVDs with other public domain movies like Carnival of Souls and Night of the Living Dead.
