Idaho Transfer (1974)

Cast:

Kelly Bohanon is Karen Braden
Kevin Hearst is Ronald
Caroline Hildebrand is Isa Braden
Keith "At least, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band isn't as bad as this movie..." Carradine is Arthur

What the box says:

A group of research scientists based at an Idaho facility discovers a means to travel forward in time, whilst remaining at the same locale. When one of the group's trips reveals a bleak future for the human race, the government steps in to shut down their research. Battling against the bureacrats sent to oversee the facility, the researchers decide to travel forward in time to find the cause of the horrible accident that apparently will ruin the ecology and threaten the very existence of man.

Plot:

A few are researching the wilderness before the Isa teleports from the camp into the lab? She learns that her sister, Karen has arrived and shows her around the project.

Will it play Shaft 8-track, too?
Apparently, they're sending people into the future to avoid some sort of eco-crisis.

The sisters head into the future but an accident sends them back to the present. They can't find anyone at the project.

Survival equipment is getting swiped from the project to be used in the future. At the future, the group is setting camp. Ronald and Karen look for supplies. They find a car and a train before the cute couple montage ensues. They find the other cgroup who have found the survivors of the disasters that have no government but are caring, etc...

Karen leaves the group and heads to the the original basecamp, which has been ravaged and wrecked. Isa attacks her.

With my sharp pointingjabby thing I shall rule all of you...
Karen manages to go back tounderground temporal base. Activating the time machine, Karen returns to the present base for food and supplies to return to the future.

In the cold winter, Karen has flashbacks before she's picked up and thrown into the car trunk.

Just throw another hitchhiker in the trunk for another hundred miles when you run low.
It was the car Karen and Ronald found earlier. A kid is being told the story of Karen by some adults who grabbed her and threw her in the trunk. The kid asks about how the world will end when they run out of people to grab and throw in car trunks.

What I say:

Idaho Transfer is directed by Peter Fonda who is probably better known for acting in movies like Easy Rider or for the Fonda acting dynasty. This movie has more 1960s generationality (OK ultra-hippy) tossed around with how the world went bad because of greed, guilt, pollution, etc...with everything else. Time travel has given a number of questions to be asked whether it is any of the various temporal paradoxes.

Idaho Transfer is an 86 long minute movie. It shouldn't drag quite as much as this movie does. Movies should have some characters that the audience like. These are whiny characters that have so many insults about how the world would be better if everyone cared and stopped their greediness, etc.... This early 1970s sci-fi movie disappeareared for nearly 15 years before re-appearing in 1988. Thanks to rise of VHS... Have to say finding a movie that is beneath the Sci-Fi Channel movie is hard to believe. Well, this movie is another of those on the huge DVD sets.

The environmental message almost makes that Don Cheadle as Captain Planet video seem actually ecotogical. Well, sometime in the future, people grab others off the side of roads and throw them in their car trunks for food.

Quotable Dialogue

"They don't know anything about the time crisis."
"Can't starts the civilization with 12 people."
"They were beautiful nightmares."
"They burnt whatever they could get their little idiot hands on."

Morals of the Story

Time travel doesn't require pants.
Doctors need Frankenstein movie posters for their clinic offices.
The future doesn't allow metal zippers.
Rock skipping is a future sport.
