What the box says:

The king of all monsters is back and bigger than ever when a UFO reveals itself as a massive alien monster with awesome destructive powers.

Plot:

At the Godzilla Prediction Network, they keep location of Godzilla. They detect something is approaching. Godzilla walks through some power lines before the TOO DARK TO SEE scene. The trackers are following the path of destruction.

A corporation is preparing to retrieve a meteorite.

Godzilla train destruction ensues.

At least, I don't have to put up with Minya.
One again, another TOO DARK TO SEE scene ensues. Power station destruction, feel the heat for all the Robert Palmer fans.

A submarine readies to recover the meteorite.

Yuki, a reporter, goes back to get a story from the Godzilla trackers.

The corporation wants to use the meteor for a new energy source. The sub begins the recovery as ships with tow lines start to lift the meteor to the surface of the water.

The Godzilla trackers have more tremors to trace.

The ships are unable to uncover any data about the meteor.

The trackers realize that Godzilla is heading for nuclear plants. Let the reactors start shutting down. Shinoda, the chief Godzilla tracker, is arguing with Katagiri, head of the Crisis Control Institute, over whether to study Godzilla or kill it. .

The meteor rises from the sea.

The military plan to attack Godzilla. By trapping him, they’ll be able to use their new armor-piercing missiles just in case. Godzilla is heading for the beach. Choppers and tanks are firing. Godzilla isn’t bothered by any of the attacks.

The meteor flies away from the ships and passes Godzilla. It attacks the big Godzilla who starts to fight back. The meteor is able to escape.

Shinoda studies some of Godzilla’s footprints.

Elsewhere, the meteor is partially submerged underwater again. Several scientists have realized the meteor uses solar power.

Shinoda and Katagiri agree to pool their resources.

With a hidden web-cam, we can spy on Sailor Moon.
Apparently, Godzilla’s skin cells regenerate in rapid time. Shinoda is talking with one of the scientists explaining why he left the CCI.

At dawn, the meteor arises.

Somehow, the Japanese remake of Flight of the Navigator bombed.
Flying over the city, the city is started to be evacuated. The meteor perches on top of one of the skyscrapers.

Back at the CCI, Katagiri and the board plan to attack the meteor at night. The computers are starting go down. The meteor is tied into the skyscraper’s computer network to suck up all the data it can.

Racoon City has almost reached maximum infection status.
Yuki is in the skyscraper trying to learn Godzilla is so important.

The CCI plans to blow up the skyscraper to cut the meteor data link. Shinoda heads in to rescue Yuki. He examines the data. Yuki tries to get Katagiri to delay the blast. Shinoda barely gets out.

He reveals the meteor’s plan. It wants to change the atmosphere and Godzilla’s healing factor.

Godzilla is heading into the city. TOO DARK TO SEE scene ensues. The meteor attacks Godzilla. However, it is TOO DARK TO SEE the scene. The alien inside the meteor is leeching energy from Godzilla and reforms.

Godzilla attacks but doesn’t seem to phase the alien. The meteor is trying to morph into a Godzilla-clone.

We always have the problems with the Overfiend.
It’s a good thing the scientists are explaining what is going on else I’d be lost. Godzilla sets his enemy on fire but, it’s still alive. The fight continues until the alien commits suicide. All think Godzilla was eliminated too. However, we hear the roar as the scene is TOO DARK TO SEE.

The scientists wield their irony suppositions. Godzilla destroyed the meteor the day after it was unearthed for the first time in 60 million years. Godzilla heads to the building. Katagiri wants to be left for Godzilla. The scientist narration finishes off with creating Godzilla and trying to destroy it as Godzilla heads out.

What I say:

This week's suggested soundtrack is Blue Oyster Cult's song, Godzilla.

If American Godzilla fans were angered by 1998's G.I.N.O-Godzilla in name only, Japan was even angrier. After killing Godzilla off a couple of years earlier, Toho Studios had originally planned to not make another Big G movie until around 2004 or so. But, with computer generated American crap, something had to be done. So, a more traditional Godzilla movie was made. Rubber suited lizard costume and all....

There's no way anyone should consider me any kind of expert kaijuologist or Godzillalogist. I've reviewed several other Godzilla movies: Godzilla's Revenge, Godzilla Vs Mothra, King Kong Vs Godzilla, and Terror of MechaGodzilla. Godzilla 2000 has to be newest Godzilla movie I've seen. The other movies were made in the 1960s. I missed the Japanese 1990s and Godzilla: Final War.

What in a movie always aggrivates you? Everyone has their particular pet peeves about movies. A movie that is boring like Massacre has no redeeming values according to me. Bad special effects can at least sometimes can cause an accidental chuckle. The thing that really bothered me about Godzilla 2000 is abbreviated by this seemingly innocuous abbreviation, TDTS. If you could guess that TDTS stands for TOO DARK TO SEE, you have just earned the honor of becoming a 4th degree Wisconsin Drinking Ninjapprentice.

Granted, Godzilla 2000 is more what anyone will think Godzilla was intended to be rather than 1998's G.I.N.O-Godzilla in name only. A slight aside, that movie had to be one of the first big blockbuster movies I saw and felt so utterly insulted by... The human actors would have been improved if they just panicked about a rampaging Godzilla. At least, the reporter and the scientist weren't automatically romantically involved in what happened in the 1998 American disaster. People who expect deep characters in Godzilla movies would have as much chance of hearing about the importance of quantum physics at the Superbowl.

What really is needed for a Godzilla movie rather than a guy in a rubber suit destroying a model city? It could be argued that some people are wanting Godzilla as an elemental force of nature. Godzilla, King of the Monsters is far more than the typical cheezy 1960s Godzilla kaiju movie. Many B-movie fans just enjoy the guy in a rubber suit destroying a model city. I'm sure that is some sort of twisted fetish.

Used to a be huge comic book fan. Trying to keep parallel timelines straight never seemed that difficult in the time. However, the Godzilla timelines are far harder to keep track of. Each timeline may have a couple of movies and then another timeline. Most seem to start of with Godzilla, King of the Monsters and some other movies: like the original and Godzilla 1985, the MechaGodzilla movies, etc...
