Alien Contamination (1981)

Contamination
Toxic Spawn

Cast:

Ian McCulloch is Commander Ian Hubbard
Louise Marleau is Colonel Stella Holmes
Marino Masé is Lieutenant Tony Aris, NYPD
Siegfried Rauch is Hamilton
Gisela Hahn is Perla de la Cruz

What the box says:

A cargo ship from South America drifts into New York City harbor and the police board the vessel to discover what happened to the crew. Finding the crew dead, apparently from their internal organs bursting out of their torso, the police discover the reason for the crew's deaths were some mysterious eggs in the cargo bay. Hoping to find the source of the eggs, the police officer heading up the investigation tracks down a former astronaut, who was part of a Mars mission that went horribly wrong.

Plot:

New York City, a copter checks on an incoming ship. The crew has disappeared from the ship which is but into quarantine.

Think we're Haz-matted enough to clean any college dorm room...
As a number of cops and doctors examine the ship, they find that the lifebots haven't been used. During the search, they find the dead captain's body and several of the crew who have exploded. The searchers reach the cargo hold and besides the cargo of coffee, a number of large green eggs are found.

Giant chest-bursting alien sacs are definitely the great way to enhance the flavor of coffee...
One of the eggs hatches and several of the cops and doctors explode. Lt. Aris was able to escape and run off...

Aris undergoes decontamination and is questioned by Colonel Stell Holmes about the ship, eggs, etc... The eggs that weren't hatched were deep freezed. Let the bio-techno-babble about the "things" aren't eggs but bacterial sacs... Drain some of the liquid from the sac and inject into the lab rat leads to another exploding. Colonel Holmes thinks the eggs would be planted in the sewers for explosives...

The group decides to check on the warehouse where the coffee is supposed to be delivered. The goons start a gunfight which leds to them getting exploded by their eggs. Holmes quickly gets the warehouse quickly burnt down.

The scientists realize that the eggs are silicon-based not carbon-based. The eggs are from outer space. Colonel Holmes realizes that the Mars mission where an astronaut, Hubbard, reported seeing a cavern of eggs that match the description of what she'd found. Unfortunately, Holmes sat on the committee that found Hubbard not sane for the space program.

Holmes goes to talk with Hubbard. He isn't too happy with her but does get a bit more receptive after seeing some of the photos of the eggs. He explains what he saw in the Martian cavern.

Who would mold a cavern entrance to like a Wamba mouth from Empire Strikes Back?

Maybe we should be careful around all these eggs it looks like Ridley Scott's Alien...
His partner, Hamiliton reported that Hubbard snapped under the pressure, etc...6 months later, Hamiliton died in a mysterious crash.

Holmes, Hubbard, and Aris decide to head down to South America to investigate the coffee plantation. Elsewhere, Hamiliton is on a boat (faked his death) and plans to eliminate the investigative three.

Holmes gets trapped in her hotel bathroom with an egg. Hubbard thankfully is able to bust the door down and free her in time.

Hamiliton realizes from a distance that Stella Holmes escaped.

Hubbard flies by the plantation while Stella and Aris meet the coffee owners for a tour. Unfortunately, these 2 of the Investigative group are quickly caught and tied up...

Hamiliton managed to sabotage the plane Hubbard was flying. Well, Hubbard did walk away from the crash. He spots the men picking the eggs and knocks out one of the pickers and disguises himself.

Stella and Aris are taken to the egg room with Hamiliton who reveals he was taken over by the alien. However, Hubbard resisted the alien's mind control. Hamiliton takes his captives to the Master, who grew from a seed brought back from Mars by Hamiliton. The eggs hatch from heat. The Master starts to mind control Aris.

Hubbard who snuck into the factory with the pickers learns that Hamiliton is still alive and has Stella and Aris.

The Master eats Aris.

The Triffids are getting smaller and hungrier...
Stella gets an attempt at mind control and slowly shambles towards the carnivorous monster. Hubbard runs in and pulls her back and shoots at the alien which catches fire. Hamiliton explodes.

The military run in to handle the goons. Hubbard and Stella ponder at the sky...Elsewhere, in a city in a pile of trash, an egg explodes cut to credits.

What I say:

It's been a while since I've seen an Italian movie excluding any one of the sword and sandal, Peplum movies. The director, Luoigi Cozzi, may be known more for his adaptation of Starcrash with David Hasslehoff and Caroline Munro from 1977's Star Wars or the Lou Ferrigino's Hercules movies from the 1980s. Well, 1979's Alien was the inspiration for this movie. The Cyclops monster does look like it's an attempt at something Gigeresque which is just another Alien inspiration.

Notice how the location of where the bacterial sacs are from Mars must have been something to do with the trip to Mars isn't mentioned for more than a half hour. Having a paperboy announcing a headline about a trip to Mars or how Hubbard was found to be crazy with his idea of seeing egg-filled caverns in Mars. Instead, the Colonel seems to be working on every secret mission including from the investigation of Hubbard a couple of years earlier to quarantined ships in New York City with exploding men...Trips to Mars like Species 2 never end well...

Why would a silicon-based lifeform want to go to a carbon-life based planet? Didn't even get some sort of preemptive strike excuse. OK, I may be trying to use just the little bit about science I remember from college. The eggs are just picked off patches and smuggled over the world. For that matter, the eggs may not been the conquering alien race but just to be used as a bio-weapon to de-terraform other planets.

It's not quite the exploding bodies one would get from Peter Jackson's Bad Taste. For a late 1970s sci-fi movie, it is trying to do sci-fi with the gore it can after Alien...If Alien can have one chest-bursting scene, then Alien Contamination can have closer to a dozen. A bit of the quality does get lost in the number... How would this have been if if Cozzi tried to make it more like a 1950s version of Henlein's Puppet Masters?

Quotable Dialogue

"They must have swallowed the stuff they're smuggling."
"And I'm a Colonel. Internal Security, responsible directly to the President, Special Division Five."
"Captain's a real turkey..."
"I don't have the gift of bringing back the dead."
"I'm warm blooded. I don't like the cold..."
"White zombies..."
